The space race between the USA and the USSR culminated in Moon landing in 1969 was followed by a kind of anticlimax, and number of lunar missions, especially manned ones, dropped off. More attention was paid to the Earth orbital flights - the American shuttles and the Russian Mir Space Station, that were also ground-breaking, as they developed the practicalities of space travel. Now the International Space station has been built, and this fact can be treated as a landmark in the history of space flights. Many scientists believe that different countries should join their efforts in exploring outer space. A permanent base will probably be established on the Moon in the next twenty years, and some manned missions to the Moon are planned for the next several years.
